Diabetes Education

Take Charge Of your Diabetes!

  • The Diabetes Self-Management Program is an educational program to help people with diabetes learn to live successfully with diabetes.
  • The diabetes management program consists of approximately 5 sessions, offered over a 3-6 month time frame.
  • At each session, you will learn more about how you can take control of your diabetes and successfully live with diabetes.

Becky Petty, RN, is the nurse educator for the diabetes program. She can answer your questions about diabetes management, provide specific instructions and training in the use of a blood sugar meter and assist you with goals for improved management. She will also help you understand label reading, eating out, and carbohydrate counting. With the expertise of a dietitian, a personalized meal plan can be developed to meet your needs.

For most people with type II diabetes, being overweight is a major issue.  We try really hard, but just can't seem to lose those extra pounds.

Here are some helpful tips:

1.)  Start by cutting your portion sizes in half

2.)  Choose a multitude of fruits and vegetables. Fresh is always good, but canned and frozen are OK too.

3.) Reduce the amount of processed foods you eat (examples are boxed and/or prepackaged dinners;, hamburger helper, macaroni  & cheese;  TV dinners; chips, cookies, crackers, and other snack-type foods.

4.)  INCREASE YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.  Unless you are bedridden and unable to move, you can do something to increase your physical movement.  (Always check with your health care provider first if you have questions about your physical abilities)
