We are excited to be able to offer our community a variety of surgical services:
- Laproscopic Cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal)
- Hernia Surgeries
- Podiatry Surgeries
- Eye Surgeries
- Gynocological Surgeries
- Minor Orthopedic Surgeries
- General Surgeries
These surgeries have become a same day surgery over the past years and these positive changes for the good of the patient have created a quality of life that some of our parents and grandparents didn’t have the option of taking advantage of in the past.
Skyline offers other types of surgeries as well. Rapidly becoming widely accepted for their diagnostic and preventive capabilities, endoscopies of the upper and lower gastro-intestinal (GI) tracts are also part of the daily scene in the Skyline surgery suite. These procedures (the EGD and colonoscopy) are performed with the aide of a mild sedative to enable the physician to visualize with the use of a camera of the tissues of the GI tract. The colonoscopy provides excellent visualization of the colon for the patient that conscientiously adheres to the preparation instructions that begin the day before.
The EGD (esophageal gastric duodenoscopy) allows excellent visualization of the esophagus, stomach (gastric area) and the first part of the duogenum (the first segment of the small intestine). This procedure is widely used to diagnose possible ulcers, gastritis, and pre-cancerous conditions caused by chronic heartburn. The majority of these conditions are easily treated with oral medications once they are diagnosed. Some people are afraid to have the procedure done because they gag easily. Numbing medication sprayed into the back of the throat, or swallowed, with the help of the short acting IV sedative medications cause us to frequently hear the comment, “I can’t believe you’re already done! I didn’t even know when you started.”
The ability to take biopsies and remove any polyps present in the colon has become a relatively simple process through the advanced technology of the flexible endoscope capabilities. Polyps can be removed before they have a chance to develop into a problem such as cancer. People age 50 and over are recommended to have a colonoscopy screening exam done. If no problems are found at all, the current recommendation for a repeat exam is 10 years (age 60!). Should a person be found to develop polyps, the follow-up recommendations are often 2-5 years depending upon the tissue make-up of the polyp(s). The physician will individualize the maintenance plan best suited to the individual need. Colonoscopy procedures have been felt to be very effective in the prevention of many colon cancers. Again, mild sedation is usually enough to make this procedure very comfortable for most people.
Every effort is made to accommodate special needs and concerns. We encourage our patients to become an active participant in their care. You’re the most important player on the team!
